22nd December 2009: 3-4pm: Tickled Pink Theatre Company
We are delighted to welcome the Tickled pink theatre company to Oakhurst Court for the first time. They will be putting on a show to entertain us all. Families and Friends welcome to join us.
17th December 2009: 3pm : Frantic Theatre Company
Frantic theatre will be performing 'Tiddly om pom pom' a high energy one man show. If their last visit is anything to go by it will be a wonderful afternoons entertainment. All family and friends welcome.
16th December 2009: 2.30pm Holy Communion
This will be the final Holy Communion of the Year. I'm sure Rev. Nicky Tredennick will also sing some rousing Christmas Carols.
15th December 2009: 2pm: St. Stephens School Choir
We have the pleasure of St. Stephens Choir again this year, to come and sing to the residents. Always a lovely Afternoon.
Saturday 12th December 2009: 3-5pm: Residents Christmas Party
All family and friends are invited to join us for the Residents Christmas party. There will be entertainment as well as refreshments and a raffle
1st December 2009: Decorating the House for Christmas
As is tradition at Oakhurst Court we will be decorationg the House for Christmas today. All volunteer helpers welcome....You will be fed and watered as a thank you!
17th November 2009: 10.30am: Friends of Oakhurst Meeting
We have a guest speaker from St. Catherines Hospice coming to speak at this meeting about end of life care. All welcome
4th November 2009: 2-4pm: Classic Clothes Collection.
We are delighted that the ladies from the classic clothes collection will be bringing in their rails of clothes for the residents to go shopping. Always a popular activity with all the residents
13th October 2009: 3-5pm Slide Show from Stephen Reid
Another wonderful opportunity to see Stephens fantastic slides set to music. Stephen has slides on all sorts of topics, but the flowers, butterfies and London Zoo are always the most popular.
Family and friends are more than welcome.
*** STOP PRESS... EXCITING NEWS***
We are delighted to announce that we have been selected as one of the five national finalists from over 400 entrants to the NAPA 'Breath of Fresh Air' competition. (Please see below for details of our week long activities). This means that 3 members of staff, plus a resident will be attending the Gala prize giving ceremony hosted by Fiona Phillips from 'GMTV' at the Royal Hospital Chelsea on the 15th September. We will keep you posted with the outcome.
Thank you to all the Team at Oakhurst, our Residents and their families for all their help and support during that busy week and throughout our Dig for Victory summer.
** Update**
As you will see from the picture below we had a wonderful time at the prize giving gala held at The Royal Hospital Chelsea. We didn't win the overall prize, that went to a residential home in Sherboure, Dorset, but we did come away with £100 cheque which will be spent on activities, and some reminiscence books and cards to help us continue our activity programme.

20th September 2009: East Surrey Alzheimer's Society Memory Walk
We were so lucky with the weather again this year for the walk. The walk was commenced by Ruth Langsford and the Surrey Harley Davidson Chapter brought there bikes to the event.
The Oakhurst Court team raised £200 this year. Thank you to everyone who sponsored us.

NAPA 'Breath of Fresh Air Week' Competition.
We took part in the National Association of Activity Providers 'Breath of Fresh Air' week again this year. The competition is open to sheltered housing complexes, residential and nursing homes, and the idea is to enjoy as many activities outside in one week as possible.
Val and the team excelled themselves again this year, and the residents really enjoyed the outdoor activities focussed around our summer long theme of 'Dig for Victory'
There was vegetable growing, walks around the garden, a trip to Godstone Farm and the finale of the week a Street Party complete with Bunting and finger sandwiches.

Dig for Victory....Oakhurst Court needs You!
All summer we will be using 'Dig for Victory as our theme for activities and events. We have ordered our free Gardeners World seeds and once arrived will start our very own kitchen garden. This will also be our theme for reminiscence therapy. If any family members would like to get involved we'd love to hear from you.

13th June 2009: 3-5pm: Summer Fete
We were blessed with beautiful weather for the Summer Fete, and were delighted that Ruth Langsford & Eammon Holmes from ITV's 'This Morning' were able to open the event.
Ruth, who's Father is a current resident is an Ambassador for the Alzheimer's Society and takes a keen interest in dementia care and whilst opening the fete said 'We are delighted with the care Dad is receiving here at Oakhurst Court.'
With a Raffle, tombola, plant & cake stall, as well as entertainment from Paul & Gordon on the keyboards & vocal the afternoon was a great success and raised just over £500 for the residents fund.
Thank you to everyone, staff, families and residents who helped to make the day so special!

13th May 2009: 2.30-4pm: Classic Clothes Collection
We are continuing our 6 monthly clothes sale, as they are enjoyed by ladies and gents alike. This is a great opportunity for residents or their families to shop for new clothes. We have found the sizes to be very generous and the clothes wash and wear really well.
We also recieve 10% of the value spent which will go into the residents fund.
11th April 2009: 3-5pm: Easter Celebrations
Marco the Magician will be coming to delight us with his tricks for our Easter Celebrations, as well as our big Easter Egg Raffle and no doubt some Easter Bonnets.
10th March 2009: 3pm: Slideshow
A Regular event that is enjoyed by many. This time we are going to be enjoying London Zoo, Butterflies and Flowers. All the slides are set to music and is a really relaxing afternoons entertainment
2nd January 2009: 3pm: Piping in the New Year
Looking forward into 2009 we will be piping in the New Year with a bagpiper. He will be playing to the residents and showing off his immaculate uniform and pipes. No doubt one of the residents will ask what he's wearing under his kilt!!

December 2008: Carols by Candlelight
Throughout December Val, our Activities Co-ordinator will be joining with the residents and staff to sing Carols by Candlelight. Val will be playing the organ while staff, residents and visitors alike can enjoy the festivities.
17th December: 2pm: Christmas Carols from St. Stephens
We are delighted that the children from St. Stephens School in Godstone are coming to sing Christmas Carols again for us this year.
Sadly the children had to cancel their visit due to illness at the school, we hope all the children get well soon and we look forward to welcoming them next year.
13th December 2008: 3-5pm: Residents and Families Christmas Party
The House is decorated beautifully and we are getting ready for the Christmas party. Families and Friends are most welcome to join the residents and enjoy the party. Entertainment will be provided by Roger Hyde on his keyboard, playing all the christmas classics! As usual we will have a raffle, all proceeds going to the resident's Fund.

25th November 2008: 10.30am: Friends of Oakhurst Meeting
The next Friends of Oakhurst meeting for family and friends of residents will be held in the dining room. We are delighted to have Dr. Paul Deffley joining us to answer any questions you may have on dementia or elder issues.
All Welcome.
19th November 2008: 2.30-3.30: Zoolab.
After the success of Zoolabs last visit during our Breath of Fresh Air Week, we have invited them back again.
They are bringing a different selection of animals including a Tomato frog, rabbits and guinea pigs. Please feel free to join us for the afternoon.

4th November 2008: 2.30-4pm. Classic Clothes Collection Sale.
Another opportunity for Resident's to buy some new clothes, helped by the ladies from 'Classic Clothes' to pick the correct sizes.
Val and Pam are always available to help residents and their families to find the right items for them, please don't hesitate to ask them.

9th October 2008: Christmas Cards
I'm afraid we've started to turn our attention to Christmas, and in reception have some Hand Crafted Christmas Cards for Sale. All proceeds go to the Resident's Fund.
Thank you to Polly Crannage for kindly making them and donating the proceeds to Oakhurst Court.
Thank you to Polly who made the cards and everyone who purchased them, £42.40 was made for the resident's fund.
8th October 2008: Investors in People Re-acreditation
We are delighted to announce that Oakhurst Court Nursing Home successfully passed it's Investors in People inspection.
Sally who inspected us first time round said 'this time she saw so much improvement in the Home's practices that it was easy to re-acredit us.'
Our favourite comment she made was 'I've never been to a Nursing home with such a fun atmosphere and to hear so much laugher around a Home.'
Well Done to ALL the Staff at Oakhurst...It was a real team effort!

"Can I do you now sir?"
The musichall theatre group present a 45 minute fun packed afternoon of entertainment!

September 28th 2008: Alzheimers Memory Walk.
We joined the Alzheimers Society in their local Memory Walk to raise funds and awareness of Dementia.
The Walk set off from Godstone Green @ 11.30am, and was approx. 4 miles long.
The Team from Oakhurst Court raised well over £100, and the Directors of the company were so pleased with the team's efforts that they have agreed to match the amount of sponsorship money raised, so we will shortly be sending a cheque to the East Surrey Alzheimer's Society for £274
Thank you to everyone who took part in the walk and all those who sponsored us.

September 16th 2008: Handbell Ringing with Angela Jones
The residents had a wonderful..if noisy afternoon bell ringing.
Angela showed us how it should be done, with some beautiful bell ringing, and then the residents had the opportunity to have a go themselves.

September 9th 2008: Friends of Oakhurst Meeting.
The next Friends of oakhurst meeting will be held in the dining room at 10.30am.
All Welcome, please attend if you are able.
August 2008: Mental Health Foundation Grant.
We have applied for a grant from the Mental Health Foundation in order to continue to improve the mental as well as physical wellbeing of all our Residents. Thank you to the relatives who emailed me with suggestions for the grant application, we had some great ideas from you all. The most popular suggestion was for sensory equipment, so Matron and I developed the idea a little further and have sent off our application. We should have some news in September, so we'll keep you posted.
October update
We are sad to report that we were unsuccessful in our bid for a grant. The Mental Health Foundation had over 300 applications for funding this year.
12th July 2008: Annual Garden Fete 3-5pm
We were lucky with the weather again this year, and had our fete in the garden and Marquee. Thank you to all those who joined us for the afternoon to make it such a success, and to Rev Nicky Tredennick and Peter Ainsworth MP who both said some lovely words to open our Fete. The Plant stall sold out!! The tombola and raffle were a popular feature again. We made a grand total of £375 for the residents fund.

25th June 2008: Anthony and his guitar
Back by popular demand, Anthony will entertain us all with familiar songs.
A Breath of Fresh Air: NAPA Competition week 16th-20th June 2008
Val Murray, Activities Co-ordinator arranged a wonderful week of activities for the Breath of Fresh Air competition. She Chose a theme of the 5 senses, and residents enjoyed Butterfly walks in the garden, fruit tasting and hand massages as well as a visit from Zoolab. Well done Val, Fingers crossed for a prize!
3rd September-Update.
Sadly we were not one of the 5 winning finalists, however we were commended for our application which was one of 400 entries!
NAPA on their website www.napa-activities.co.uk estimates that 14000 elderly residents throughout the UK enjoyed taking part in the competition.
A book about all the activites undertaken will be published later in the year, we will ensure we get a copy. Anyone wishing to read it, please contact Val or Nicky.

21st May 2008: Fairground Whurlitzer Organ Recital
This will be our first official outside event of the summer (Weather permtting!) The Fairground organ will play all the old favorites and residents and guests will be able to ask all those things you've ever wanted to know about the organ.
13th May 2008: Classic Clothes Collection
Another resounding success!!
All the residents had a great time at the clothes sale, trying things on for size and making purchases. We recieved commission £128 for the resident's fund from this event. We hope to hold another classic Clothes Collection sale later in the year.
